Below is information on my four published books, each one co-authored, co-edited, or otherwise co-created.

The Game Design Reader: A Rules of Play Anthology
Edited by Katie Salen & Eric Zimmerman, MIT Press 2006

The Game Design Reader is a companion volume to Rules of Play, a wide-ranging anthology with more than 30 essays about game design and game culture. Writings include game design case studies, classic philosophical essays on games and play, articles by game journalists on the experience of playing videogames, and the best essays from the emerging field of game studies. Katie and I wrote about 100 pages of introductory material (including amazing visual essays by Katie) and the book as a whole is more than 900 pages, with cross-referenced sections like The Game Design Process, Game Communities, Game Spaces, and Cultural Representation. It really is a tremendous and unique collection that makes me proud to be part of gaming today.

Rules of Play: Game Design Fundamentals
Katie Salen & Eric Zimmerman, MIT Press 2004

Rules of Play is a textbook on game design. Rather than a technical book or a how-to manual, Rules of Play focuses on understanding what games are, how they function, and how they can be designed to create meaningful expereinces for players. It covers everything from card and board games to party games and sports to computer and video games. Rules of Play has been widely adopted as a textbook in courses on game design, game development, and game studies. Plus amazing book design by my co-author Katie Salen.

RE:PLAY Game Design + Game Culture
Amy Scholder & Eric Zimmerman, editors, Peter Lang 2004

RE:PLAY is a book record of a series of events I directed, including an online symposium and a real-world conference in NYC, all sponsored and facilitated by the digital art museum Eyebeam Atelier. Although this book has gotten less attention than Rules of Play, it is just as good. RE:PLAY consists mostly of conversations between top-notch game designers and game scholars (including Warren Spector, Chris Crawford, Henry Jenkins, Brenda Laurel) on a wide range of topics. Featuring playful sidebar text by Justin Hall, RE:PLAY is a very good read.

Life in The Garden: A Deck of Stories
Nancy Nowacek & Eric Zimmerman, RSUB Press 2000

This curious project is actually a paper interactive book in which the player draws five pages from a deck of about 50, shuffles them, and then places them inside a miniature book cover to read them. The result is a coherent story every time. The content of Deck of Stories is a procedural rewriting of the Garden of Eden myth, and Nancy Nowacek’s graphic design and illustrations bring out the metaphysicality of the tale. The book has been out of print for some time, but Nancy and I are currently concocting plans to create more of these little books.
