I write about games and game design.
When I entered the game industry at the beginning of the 90s, videogames had been around for a few decades, but there was hardly any critical writing about games and game design. There were very few places to study game design, and very few academics were studying games. That was the context in which Katie Salen and I began to write Rules of Play in 2001 (it was published in 2004).
Today of course, things are different. Books are published all the time about game design, game development, games and learning, game studies, or something else, and every week there is a new conference on some facet of games. Games journalism has blossomed as well, and there are countless blogs and sites, podcasts and videos, about games.
Writing has helped me understand what games are, how they generate meaningful experiences for players, and what it is that I do as a game designer. Read more about my books and essays here.
